PRESS RELEASE:

Rep. Carl Wimmer announces intention to run for re-election in 2010

Utah State Representative Carl Wimmer (R-Herriman) announced Friday that he will seek a third term as state Representative for House District #52 in 2010.  "We are at a pivotal point in this country. People are waking up politically and they are coming back to the core beliefs that made this nation great," Wimmer said.

Carl Wimmer has served in the Utah legislature for three years.  In May of 2009 Wimmer went on The Glenn Beck television show and announced the formation of the nationwide Patrick Henry Caucus, which holds as its sole objective the reinstatement of balanced federalism as defined in the 10th amendment to the United States Constitution.  Carl Wimmer said that his involvement in the caucus led to his decision to run for re-election. "With the massive growth of the Patrick Henry Caucus nationally, I feel an obligation to continue to help lead this important movement.  I believe I can be of greatest use to the cause of freedom, if I remain in office until the Patrick Henry Caucus is in all fifty states."

In addition to his other responsibilities Carl Wimmer is also the chairman of the largest family based coalition in Utah, The Family Action Council Team (F.A.C.T).  "Representative Wimmer's leadership and involvement in this coalition has been priceless, he is a natural leader" said Laura Bunker one of the founders of the FACT Coalition.

Representative Wimmer has sponsored some truly landmark pieces of legislation during his short time in office.  In 2008 he sponsored and passed Utah's version of "Jessica's law."  This law made the murder of a child a capital crime, making the offender eligible for the death penalty.  It also increased the penalties for child sexual offenses from 3 years in prison to a minimum mandatory 25 years to life on a first offense, and life without parole on a second offense.  "This law is my crown jewel.  I believe this law has done more good for the protection of our most precious resource, our children, than anything else I could have done."

In the 2009 session, Carl Wimmer sparked another nation-wide movement when he became the first legislator in the nation to sponsor and pass a state constitutional amendment guaranteeing the right to vote by secret ballot.  The amendment HJR-8 passed The House and The Senate with the required two-thirds majority and will be voted on by the people in November 2010.  Big labor worked extremely hard to defeat the amendment, because it included elections for organizing a labor union and is considered a direct attack against the President Obama supported Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA). With the passage of HJR-8, Rep. Wimmer started a national firestorm to stop the EFCA.

Carl Wimmer is aware that because of his willingness to take on the tough issues, he is now subject to various attacks from his political opponents, even from those outside of Utah. "I have heard that I am the top target (for defeat) for several organizations.  There are particular special interest groups who will work tirelessly, and spend tens-of-thousands of dollars in an attempt to defeat me. I must be ready, and I will be."
